The 2013 Krispy Kreme Challenge was Saturday, February 9th at 8:30am. All the proceeds went to the NC Children’s Hospital (they did a bang-up job on Mini’s arm a few years ago and I’m eternally grateful for the the way they treated her).
The Challenge was a 2.5 mile run through Raleigh, NC from the NCSU Memorial Belltower to a Krispy Kreme, eat 12 doughnuts and then run 2.5 miles back.
There was a costume contest. Amongst the contestants were: Superheros, gladiators, demons, monsters, zombies, etc. There were also folks dressed but not for the contest. Speedo-clad men and women, a fellow in a suit, another fellow in a tuxedo and all sorts of other odd running outfits. The whole event was covered in a feeling of fun and frivolity.
The course was a pretty good tour through Raleigh and it surprised me that so many main streets were completely shut down to traffic for the several-hours long event. It was pretty awesome, since here in Jacksonville there’s almost never a street closure for anything other than repair or parade…And even that is met with an outcry of public dismay. There were hills. We didn’t like them so much.
Ann Marie and I were “casual runners” so the eating of the doughnuts was optional (It’s not like we were going to win!). But we did have to carry the boxes of doughnuts from the Krispy Kreme to the finish.
There was also a loud street preacher that wanted us to participate in the race “with endurance”…Um. Kind of goes without saying, yeah? The dude was only mildly annoying and really, we only heard him for about 2 minutes at the beginning and end of the run.
It was a great event. Everyone was out to have a good time and enjoy fresh doughnuts. We’re planning on doing it again next year.
